The Institute has five major
stakeholders:
- Industry
- Academe
- The Legal / IP Profession
- Government
- The General Public
Objectives
The Institute's mission can be broken
down into four distinct objectives.
- To identify, define and fund research,
the fruits of which will provide greatest benefit
to the Institute's stakeholders.
- To communicate effectively research-derived
intelligence and information to the Institute's stakeholders.
- To make an active contribution to
the development of a legal, social and regulatory
framework which supports innovation.
- To promote widespread acceptance
and understanding of the contribution of IP to the
economy and society at large.
Benefits
The Institute seeks to deliver benefits
to each of its stakeholding groups as follows:
Industry: providing
research-based intelligence and information on IP-related
issues which affect companies' competitiveness; raising
awareness of such issues among companies; providing
a platform of independent research information on which
to base industrial representation to policy makers;
providing a forum for networking with fellow industrialists,
the legal profession, academics and IP practitioners.
Academe: providing
a link to industry and the legal profession to inform
research programmes; providing assistance in identifying
and defining research proposals, and securing funding;
providing a forum for multidisciplinary research and
increasing the profile and impact of research results.
The legal / IP profession:
providing research-based intelligence and information
on IP-related issues which affect clients' competitiveness;
raising awareness of such issues among IP users; providing
a platform of independent research information on which
to base legal decisions; providing a forum for networking
with industrialists, fellow legal professionals, academics
and IP practitioners.
Government: providing
input to formulate policy in the IP, trade and competitiveness
agendas, through the provision of relevant, independent
academic research; providing a forum for networking
with IP users, professionals and academics; providing
a mechanism to ensure the effective utilisation of government
research funds.
The general public: providing information
on IP law and raising awareness of IP-related issues;
promoting informed debate on such issues where they
are in the general public interest.
